Over 40? Poor eyesight? Fingers like sausages?

If you answered "Yes" to all of these questions, then welcome to the gang. It's official - you're normal but cell phone manufacturers have, in general, decided that if you want a hip, trendy, state of the art mobile phone - you better look for it elsewhere!

All of the latest phones, both touch screen and keypad, are made for people with slender fingers and 20/20 vision.

Cellphones used to be available on a sort of level playing field.

A few years ago, they were all much of a muchness but once we started buying phones for our ten and eleven year olds ("Yes, guilty your honour."), it was clear where the market for mobile phones really lay - with the young!

Cell phones in the last decade have gone through a sort of epiphany - helped in part by market forces and better technology but for anyone not quite in the 'ideal demographic' mode, they've also become an item we have to go to a specialist to buy.

Cell Phone Or Fashion Accessory?

• I want a phone for emergencies.
• I want a phone to text friends.
• I want a phone to call people.
• I want a phone which fits in my handbag (purse).
• I want a phone screen alphabet keys I can see without putting on my glasses.
• But yeah, I want it to look good too.

Have Over-40s Been Abandoned By the Big Cell Phone Manufacturers?

I know this sounds like a bit of a rant but I am long-sighted.

I only need to wear my glasses for reading and for seeing my computer screen clearly.

I don't want to wear my glasses when I'm out and about.

If I was sitting in a rowboat in the middle of Lake Louise and I fancied sending a text, I don't want to put on my glasses because then Lake Louise becomes a blur.  I like to see people's faced when I'm looking at them, otherwise, with specs on, everybody pretty much looks the same.

I have a smartphone - stupid idea, I have fingers like sausages and I need glasses to see the tiny screen.

I do use the zoom tool for browsing the internet but then it takes 15 minutes to read a text which should only take 3 minutes.

Try scrapping around in your purse for glasses, whilst also holding your phone to see a text - can't be done!

Mobile Phones For the Over 40s - At Last!

So fed up with my problems (long-sightedness, fat fingers, disorganised purse/handbag) I went online in search of a cell phone which would look good and also not require me to wear glasses to read texts.

It needs to have bigger keys so that I can use it - or if it's a smartphone, a way to make the keys have a bigger 'thumb print' so they're easy to press. I've tried a variety of apps (Apple & Android) to do this but it takes time to load them and it's a very hit and miss affair.

I found excellent phones at Amazon.co.uk for those with podgier digits, I had less success at Amazon's US site (maybe you Americans have daintier hands?).

Anyway, rant over - I'm hoping that all of the big cell phone manufacturers give us at least one or two phones which have what we need plus some aesthetic consideration - 'Fones4FatFingers-N-Foureyes' - (I'm kidding!)

I'm sure they'll come up with something smart and hip - and we'll buy the phone!
